Vaccinations

Puppies and Kittens

Puppies and kittens need a series of vaccines.  Vaccines for young animals begin around 6-8 weeks of age, and should continue regularly until 14-16 weeks of age, at which point their immune system has matured.

Adult Dog

The following vaccines are considered core for the average, active adult dog. Every dog is different, though, and a detailed outline of what is appropriate for your pet will be established during his/her routine wellness exam:

Rabies
Rabies is a fatal virus if contracted, and the only vaccine required by law. Unfortunately we have seen several cases of rabies in Hillsborough county in the last few years, and we do strongly recommend keeping your pets up to date.
DHPP
Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus—This vaccine is a series of viruses that can affect young and older dogs.
Lepto
This is often included with the DHPP vaccine (DHLPP). Lepto is a bacterial disease that affects the kidneys and can be fatal. It is transmitted in the urine of wildlife, and there are several cases in our county each year.

The following vaccines are very important in some pets depending on their lifestyle:

Bordetella
Often known as the “kennel cough” vaccine, this vaccine is very important in preventing a very serious upper respiratory infection.
Canine Influenza
This is another disease that can affect some very social animals. Many local daycares recommend or require it for regular visits.

Adult Cats

Much like dogs, every cat is different and a detailed outline of what is appropriate for your cat can be determined during his/her wellness exam.

Rabies
Rabies is a fatal virus if contracted, and the only vaccine required by law. Unfortunately we have seen several cases of rabies in Hillsborough county in the last few years, and we do strongly recommend keeping your pets up to date.
FVRCP
Feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and and panleukopenia. These viruses can affect both young and old pets.
Feline leukemia
This virus affects the immune system of cats and can lead to weak immune systems and other health issues.
